Why Was SEAL Team 6 (DEVGRU) Chosen Over Delta Force (1st SFOD-D) For The Abbottabad Operation?

I think this is a good question to ponder, but doubt you will get any answer that actually answers the question. Our Special Forces operate in a vacuum that is supposed to be clandestine. I am all for movies like Act of Valor and books that glamorize our special operators. However, the reason our Special Forces are the best at what they do is because - they keep their mouths shut. I have worked in the past with Navy SEALs and even after they have left the Navy, they don’t talk about their prior operations.
As an Intelligence Officer that served in Afghanistan, I am very familiar with our special forces capability. It was frustrating to hear that one of our helicopters that performed the OBL raid had to be left behind and destroyed. I am not certain the Pakistanis wouldn’t share some of the wreckage with other countries. I hope there was no identifiable technology left onboard the helicopter that gives away our stealth capability.
In my work with SOCOM, there is always going to be a healthy tension between SEALs and Delta. SEALs tend to get a lot of the glory. The past two commanders of SOCOM have been Navy SEALs, which is why they have been used more frequently in big operations. However, having been on the ground and seen the tremendous work of Delta and Rangers.
Bottom line is no matter which of our special operators does the job, we should all feel proud that we have the best in the business. Let’s keep it that way!
